You've got questions? We've got answers.

Most people who have not yet discovered TMS therapy as a treatment option often ask similar questions. Please review our frequently asked questions or feel free to call us for more information at:

(585) 201-8508

  • How long it takes and what to expect?

Individual sessions can take anywhere from 15 to 40 minutes and occur over several weeks. Every patient is different and some may need different courses of treatment. We tailor each treatment specifically to the client's needs.

  • What are the side effects of TMS?

Side effects are possible, but if they do occur, they're generally minor and lessen with each treatment. Side effects can include a headache, discomfort around the treatment area, tingling, spasms, or twitching of facial muscles, and lightheadedness. Only a small percentage of patients experience any side effects.

  • Does insurance cover TMS therapy?

Yes, TMS is covered by most insurances, but this can vary by state. We are in-network with various insurance providers, so please be sure to call us, or complete a contact form, if you have specific questions. Also, it's always a good idea to contact your carrier to determine eligibility.

  • What if you don’t take my insurance?

If you are interested in receiving TMS treatment and have insurance we do not currently accept, please contact us, as we may be able to work with your insurance if there are no in-network providers in the area.

  • Do I need to have insurance to get TMS?

You do not need to have insurance and we offer self-pay rates.  Please contact us for more information.

  • Do you take over all my psychiatric and/or medical care?

We only provide the TMS intervention and the necessary evaluations related to TMS.  It is important that any other doctors working with you during our treatments communicate any medication changes.

  • Do you offer other treatments besides TMS?

At this time, we only offer TMS.  We have plans of expanding to offer ketamine assisted psychotherapy, biofeedback interventions, and other modern interventions, so check back often!

How does TMS therapy work?

In depressed patients, electrical activity in certain areas of the brain is reduced.

Treatment Resistant Depression

Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) therapy has been found to be an effective treatment option for individuals with Treatment-Resistant Depression (TRD). Here's how TMS therapy supports the treatment of TRD:

  1. Targeted Brain Stimulation: TMS therapy specifically targets the prefrontal cortex, the region of the brain associated with mood regulation. By applying magnetic pulses to this area, TMS helps modulate the neural activity and restore the balance of neurotransmitters, such as serotonin, which are implicated in depression.
  2. Neuroplasticity and Neural Networks: TMS has been shown to promote neuroplasticity, the brain's ability to reorganize and form new neural connections. In TRD, certain brain regions may have altered activity or connectivity patterns. TMS can help reshape these neural networks, potentially alleviating depressive symptoms.
  3. Regulation of Mood Circuitry: TMS therapy can modulate the activity of key mood-regulating circuits, such as the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex and the limbic system. By enhancing the activity in these areas or rebalancing their functioning, TMS may help regulate mood and alleviate depressive symptoms.
  4. Treatment Augmentation: TMS therapy can also be used in conjunction with other treatment modalities, such as medication and psychotherapy, to augment their effects. For individuals who have not adequately responded to traditional antidepressant medications, adding TMS to their treatment regimen can improve outcomes and provide relief from TRD.
  5. Non-Invasive and Well-Tolerated: TMS is a non-invasive procedure that does not require anesthesia or sedation. It is generally well-tolerated, with minimal side effects. This makes it a viable option for individuals who cannot tolerate or have not responded well to other treatment options, such as medication or electroconvulsive therapy (ECT).

It's important to note that TMS therapy is typically administered as a course of multiple sessions over several weeks. The exact treatment protocol may vary depending on the individual and the severity of their TRD. It's crucial to consult with a qualified healthcare professional to determine if TMS therapy is a suitable option and to develop an individualized treatment plan.
